Vista, 2020-2023
The work Vista* is a cedarwood relief formed by a pair of crystal eyes which are commonly used in religious statues (roca) dressed in fabric clothes. The relief, sculpted on a 1:1 natural scale, is installed at the eye level of an
average-height spectator, marking the start of a sentence, of a clause, of an open narrative on the wide empty wall, from a point of view, or from the view of a point. Beyond the idea of an exhibition to be viewed, the title Vista, which means View in Portuguese, can also be read as the verb “vestir” (to wear), which in Portuguese conjugates as “vista” in its subjunctive form, meaning that it is also something that could be worn by the public.
Thiago Honório, May 2023.
* Translator’s note: In Portuguese, the word “vista" means both view and the verb to wear in the subjunctive mood.
